the mountain pasture season at unesco

In Switzerland, from May to October, it’s alpine pasture season, when cattle are driven to higher pastures for a richer diet. Alpacists look after the animals and the pastures, transforming the milk into cheese and welcoming visitors. This tradition preserves the landscape, strengthens social and economic ties, and perpetuates cultural and religious practices. The knowledge and customs of l\’alpage, passed on informally within families and communities, are also perpetuated through training courses, cultural events and tourism. This socio-cultural experience is a strong symbol of Swiss identity, and the alpine pasture season was included in 2023 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
